Kismet on Windows (without a drone)

It is possible to get Kismet to run on Windows without using a drone. How? Well first (and this is probably the killer) you need to have an AirPcap USB adapter and then you need to download Kismet for Windows.

What is AirPcap?

If you need to capture 802.11b/g packets in Windows, then AirPcap is your answer. Made by the guys who brought you WinPcap and Wireshark, AirPcap enables you to capture raw Wi-Fi packets in Windows. AirPcap fully integrates into Wireshark, giving you a seamless packet capture experience. Read More AirPcap…

Kismet for Windows is available from the CACE Tech website. At present, it only works with AirPcap and Kismet drones.

I’ve attempted to use Kismet with AirPcap, but can’t seem to get it going correctly. Kismet claims to be discovering dozens of Infrastructure APs, but with “no SSID” and all sort of differnt BSSIDs. There also doesn’t seem to be much written anywhere on exactly how to configure it.

Most sites indicate the need to compile Cygwin with the AirPcap drivers, but since CACE released a Kismet installation file for use with their AirPcap USB adapter, one would think that compiling had already been done. . .

    Friseal,

I’ve come across that problem too. From memory, it’s not Kismet, it’s actually the AirPcap driver. I forget exactly how to fix it (and I can’t replicate it at the moment) but try opening up the AirPcap Control Panel and having a play with the different Basic Configuration settings, including resetting the configuration.

I wish I could replicate it again so I could tell you exactly what to do!

Let me know how you get on :)

No, as is stated in the original post, you need an AirPcap.
