Windows XP SP3 available from Microsoft Technet

If you have a Technet subscription, you can get early access to Windows XP Service Pack 3 from the Technet Subscriptions page. Scroll down the page and look for the grey “Top Downloads” section.

I’ve been running it for a few days now and haven’t had any problems :)

If you don’t have a Microsoft Technet subscription - which I highly recommend - you can probably find a direct download link around somewhere.

New Vostro Laptops from Dell

Dell has just launched a few new smaller, lighter Vostro laptops. If you’re not familiar with the Vostro range, they’re aimed at smaller, budget-conscious businesses and provide good value for money - while sacrificing some of the looks of the more expensive Latitude range. We bought a few Vostros a while ago at work and general feedback has been good, though lately we’ve been buying Latitudes.

Downloaded a CHM file but can’t view it?

Navigation to the webpage was canceled. What you can try: Retype the address

If you’ve downloaded a .chm file, but on opening it, can’t see anything, I have a solution for you :)

Ta-da

  • Right click on the file >  Properties
  • Find the “Unblock” button, and click it.
  • Re-open the .chm and it should now display properly :)

How do you settle on a notebook supplier for your Company?

I’m curious about this. How does a company come to settle on a specific brand or specification of laptop - or any PC for that matter?

Lately, I’ve gone for Dells, as they make it nice and easy. I can call or email my account manager, give him a base unit reference from their website, ask for a number of changes (”I want a spare power adapter, an x res screen and a y size HD instead”) and they do it all for me, and, more often than not, get me a quote within an hour.

So far, I’ve found it hard to find that flexibility and convenience. Unless I’m missing something/someone…

So the question is…

Everyone: What brand machines does your current company use?

IT Pros: Which brand(s) do you buy for your company PCs, and more importantly, why?
